Here’s an update of the projects I’m working on in March. Taking a breather while also making a mobile for an upcoming call.
What I’m working on – March 2026
I DID IT!! I turned in my application for the Alabama State Council on the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship! I’ve been working on the essays for this proposal since January and I’m thrilled to have done this project. Even if I don’t receive the Fellowship, I’m proud of myself for thinking through where I’d like my artistic practice to go in the next eighteen months and then writing SO MANY versions and revisions to articulate that vision. I know people say “this has been a great learning experience” so often it feels like a cliché, but it actually has been a great learning experience and one I wouldn’t have even attempted a few years ago.
So this month I’m working on maybe one big project (the mobile listed below and some of the parts pictured above) and continuing to rest my broken foot and maybe casting around a little bit for the next thing.
Where you can see my work
Three of Wands (A phylogeny of my creativity) will be part of Embracing Art 2026 at the Carnegie Visual Arts Center running from March 24-May 10, 2026. If you are in the area, I hope you will make time to see this fantastic showcase of North Alabama artists. I’m honored to be among them.
Six of Cups (Cherishing memories of Big Spring Park) will be in From Source to Sea: Alabama Streams of She at The Library Art Gallery at Birmingham Botanical Gardens from May 1-June 25, 2026. There will be a closing reception Thursday, June 25, 2026 from 5:30-7:30 pm. I just found out about this one on Sunday so I’m thrilled to announce this!!

Open calls I’m working on
I’m currently making a mobile based on The Star card from the Major Arcana in the Tarot for an open call called “Boarderless” from the Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art. When I started working on this project, I thought it would be easy. As with everything, once I got in it, it turns out to be more complicated than I had imagined.

Once I have this piece done for this call, I’ll have to start casting around for a new thing to work on because it’s the end of my list of open calls. One of the things I decided to do this year was use open calls as an opportunity to make new work using the call as a prompt to build off of.
I started this process because I kept seeing open calls and not having a specific piece in my portfolio already made to answer the call with. So I wondered what it would be like to try to work towards the call deadlines using them as a prompt to work from. It means I can answer the call specifically and make the work inside the size allotment for each call. It’s been a fun process and having that bounded by the series I’m doing called In Search of Alchemy where I use the meanings of Tarot cards to inform what I make, I feel like I’ve got some good mojo going.
Paper things
These tiny paper weavings are some of the exploratory making I did for the mobile. I’m not sure these will end up on the finished piece but they are tiny and cute, which means I love them.
Crochet things
I’ve bee making stars for the mobile! The big stars on top will be the main star and the smaller ones are color tests for other stars to go around it.
I continue to not make progress on either of the shawls or the cowl that I started in December? I think?? We watched a ton of Olympics this month and so my tv crocheting was nearly zero.
Other things in progress
Now that the grant deadline has past, I’ll be sharing my essays with you over the next few weeks. I hope you caught last week’s post about mind mapping my work. That project was so much fun and I hope it encourages you to take a look back through some of your older work to find commonalities and encouragement. Also, making a mind map is just FUN.
What about you? What are you working on this month? I’d love to hear about it! Email me or start a conversation by leaving a comment on this post! If you’d like to keep up with what I’m working on, I’d love to have you as a newsletter subscriber. I include blog posts from here, cool things I find online, and pictures of my dogs. Oh wow, you’re keeping busy. I wish I could be so structured to know what I’ll work on this month but at least I know that this moment I’m crocheting a shawl. LOL.
Cheers
