16-page watercolor paper journal flip through

A bit about my watercolor paper journal with a video flip through and lotsa pictures. This one is a bit of a different animal!

I zoom into some projects head first with a plan. Sometimes I just meander through certain early steps and the plan evolves as I go. This watercolor journal was a bit of both. I knew I wanted to do a Teesha Moore watercolor paper journal because I wanted to do some watercolor experimentation so that’s what got me started. Once I was in it, I had some really lovely drawing accidents that I could have never foreseen.

The setup

I did some loose watercolor painting on both sides of a sheet of 22×30″ watercolor paper. Then after that was completely dry, I used Teesha Moore’s Amazing 16-page journal tutorial to create the booklet.

Here’s what it looked like just as I finished putting it together as a pamphlet-stitched journal:

The pages

I find more and more that animals are emerging in my work. It’s not all that surprising since I really love animals. The shrimp here might be one of my most favorite things I’ve ever made. I’m seriously considering making a sticker of him the next time StickerMule* has a sale.

I don’t set out to make animals but when there are shapes that suggest animals in the happenstance of what I’m making, I feel like I need to seize the opportunity. I don’t think I’m that great of a drawer but I recently read Lynda Barry’s Syllabus and her approach really appeals to me. So I’m trying to get more comfortable drawing/doodling in my work. She uses Ivan Brunetti’s Cartooning as one of her texts and so I have that on my “to be read” pile now as well. One of these days I’ll have a proper drawing sketchbook to show off!

The whole flip through

Here’s me talking about the whole book as I do a flip through. It’s a lot the same as my other work but then I feel like it’s very different in some important ways. I’m stretching and growing!

You can see some other of my journal flip throughs here, here, and here.
