Art AV Club: Daisy Parris

In this Art AV Club I take a look at the work of Daisy Parris and we hear them talk about the way they work. I point out the echoes of their work in mine.

Art AV Club came about when I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole watching videos about Cy Twombly. Videos of artists talking about their work or art historians talking about artists’ work is a magical thing that we are so lucky to have access to FOR FREE on the internet. I particularly like to examine artists whose work moves me and how my work intersects with theirs. Join me for this week’s Art AV Club: Daisy Parris.

This series has been on hiatus for a long time but when YouTube served me this first interview with Daisy Parris I knew immediately that I was going to pull Art AV Club out of retirement for them. Their work speaks to me on a deep level. I was texting with my friend Charlotte about Daisy’s work and I said that one of their paintings looked like “some sort of perfect love child between Monet’s Water Lilies and Mark Bradford’s Pickett’s Charge.” And then almost immediately in the video I was watching they started talking about how much Water Lilies influenced the piece. Reader, I gasped out loud.

Studio Interview

There’s so much to love in this video: Daisy’s studio, the pigs in the yard, the English countryside, the conversation, and of course the PAINTINGS!!

Be on the lookout for the three panel piece towards the end of the video. Daisy and Sim are sitting on a leather couch in front of it. Keep it in your mind for the following video.

When I say I am obsessed, I mean I am OBSESSED. I have been thinking about the paintings from this show for five days straight. Finding the next video where Daisy walks through and talks about these works was so lucky. I can’t even stand myself right now.

“Clouds for Breakfast” artist talk and walkthrough

As you watch this video look for the titular piece Clouds for Breakfast. It is the piece from the previous video that I said to keep your eye on. Notice what changed and what didn’t. I literally took screen shots so I could compare them.

Daisy says at the 8:45-ish minute mark, “Nothing’s wasted” about the scraps they use. I wrote that for last week’s post on my current work in progress. Clearly their words made a huge impact on me and they have been sitting just under the surface and just came out when I was writing the post.

What’s underneath

I’m always trying to build up layers in my work and then deconstruct to what’s underneath. It’s maybe one of my favorite things about Daisy’s work and the one I have a hard visceral “YES” response to. Here’s what that looks like for me:

The words, oh the words!

The other piece of Daisy’s work I love are the words. Text in a work is always something I’m dancing around. Words live in my head in giant heaps and almost always find their way into my work:

Go exploring on your own
