My first long artistic hiatus was marked by fear and self doubt. I remember so very clearly the paralyzing feeling of worthlessness. Days stretched into weeks and then months of me thinking I wouldn’t make art again and why should I, since no one cared if I made art at all. What broke through that negative feeling was realizing that I cared. I wanted to make things and if I wanted to do it, that was a good enough reason to make whatever crappy thing I wanted to make. And sometimes if I keep making and stop worrying about outcomes, the things I make are beautiful. This has been a long break for me. Almost a month. And today I knew I could start a project that has been brewing since Thanksgiving week. Trust yourself. Trust the creative impulse that drives you to make things. Trust that there is space for you. Decided to take my mind off of being sick with some painting. I’ve been trying to think of what to call this stag beetle and after reading about them a bit today I’m thinking of calling her Lucy because their scientific name is Lucanidae. They live “long mysterious lives underground”, up to 6 years.
