A quick project that adds a lot of value to my notebook experience! I show you how I replace the metal spiral with a crocheted spine.

Crochet Spine Tutorial
I posted a pic of a spiral bound notebook that I removed the spine and crocheted a new one a few weeks ago on my Instagram and it got some looks. So I thought I’d share my crochet spine tutorial with you!
Materials
- fingering weight yarn – I use ends from other projects. I think using worsted weight yarn would be VERY difficult. Sport might work but I never have sport weight just hanging out.
- 3 mm crochet hook – you will have to judge for yourself what size hook will fit your notebook.
- scissors
- big binder clip or big rubber band – to hold the book together while you are working on it.
- yarn needle – if you want to make a tassel like I do in the video.
- beads – optional if you want to do beads on the end of your bookmark instead of a tassel.

Some thoughts
This project makes it easier for my left-handed self to use this kind of notebook. Yarn instead of metal is just more aesthetically pleasing all the way around. I’ve been using them for a while now and have made several for friends and they are just kinda delightful for day to day use. I hope you make one and you enjoy it. Tag me in pics if make one so I can see it!

Thank you for taking the time to show us the process — and for including the part with the fraying yarn. Problem solving is a skill that is so important in fiber arts. I recently learned how to “read” my crochet, and I feel so much more successful now.
Now, I am thinking about spiral books and deciding which needs a crocheted spine……lol
I almost cut that bit out and then decided to leave it for exactly that reason! I can’t wait to see what you make!!
Impressive! I like spiral bound journals because they open flat & can expand easily as they fill, but that metallic binding always feels “harsh”. This is a beautiful alternative. Thanks for sharing.🍀
100% same!!
