Six of Cups (Cherishing memories of Big Spring Park)

“Six of Cups (Cherishing memories of Big Spring Park)”

(paper weavings, glue, yarn, copper wire, Tulip Poplar tree branch)
12×19″ wall hanging

In my current body of work, I am exploring themes from the tarot. I created this piece for an Alabama Women’s Caucus for Art open call on the waterways of Alabama. So I took these two themes and wove them together.

Big Spring Park has been the setting of many delightful memories for my family. As my two kids have grown up, we’ve fed the ducks, gone to classes at the museum, ice-skated in the winter, enjoyed art at Panoply, and they graduated at the Von Braun Center across the street. We have cap and gown pictures of both at the water’s edge.

In the tarot, the suit of Cups is associated with the element of water. The Six of Cups card deals with themes of: children, childhood memories, past influences, nostalgia, playfulness, innocence, creativity, sharing, and family.

This piece is made of paper, string, yarn, copper wire, and a Tulip Poplar stick from my backyard. After construction, I took the finished piece to Big Spring Park and dipped it in the pool at the mouth of the spring.

The zine

One of the new ways I’m documenting what I make is to create a quick zine about the process. I don’t want this step to get bogged down so this is the quickest and the dirtiest. Just a sheet of drawing paper turned into a one page zine where I record things that were meaningful to me during the making process. It’s a way to stop and savor what I’ve done. Plus record it like social media doesn’t exist because well, it mostly doesn’t for me anymore. Flip through the pages below!
